Early detection and screening by mammograms along with clinical breast exams and other imaging exams comprise the best way to detect cancer at an earlier stage. When detected early, cancer treatment is less aggressive and the cure rate is drastically increased.
A study done in Sweden found that the death rate from breast cancer was 29%
lower in the women over 40 years of age who received regular mammograms compared to those who did not. With early screening mammograms, many lives can be saved.
Latinas tend to have a lower incidence rate for breast cancer than whites, blacks and Asians but they have a less favorable prognosis because of delayed treatment. Latinas have one of the highest mortality rates of those who are diagnosed with breast cancer because they wait too long to get treatment.
Several reasons why Latinas wait for treatment have been cited such as lack of insurance and lack of awareness. BOWF directly targets these gaps so Latinas and others in underserved communities lives can be saved.
